A friend of SubPress, Shawn Speakman, who runs the long established site for author signings, SignedPage.com, recently went through a tough stretch, and has started a small press to help pay off outstanding medical bills. We asked Shawn for a couple hundred words to help push his novel and press.

Shawn Speakman, the webmaster for authors Terry Brooks and Naomi Novik, was diagnosed with cancer last year, the uninsured treatment snowballing into more than $200,000 of debt. Shawn is a friend of Subterranean Press and we are happy he beat the cancer.

Rather than declare bankruptcy though, Shawn launched Grim Oak Press. He is publishing his own fantasy novel, The Dark Thorn, and has gathered Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, Tad Williams and more than twenty other great writers to contribute to a fantasy anthology titled Unfettered, the proceeds from which will go toward alleviating that $200,000+.

The ordering period for The Dark Thorn has begun and there are two hardcover editions to consider. The first is an unsigned trade hardcover that is limited to 1500 copies. It is $30.00.  The other is a leather-bound Signed & Numbered edition that is limited to 500 copies, and is triple-signed by Shawn, artist Todd Lockwood, and cartographer Russ Charpentier. It is $75.00. The number of this edition gives the owner the right to purchase the same number of the Signed & Numbered edition of Unfettered!
