HELLCATS AND HONEYGIRLS — Another Winning Review

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Hellcats and Honeygirls

We’re readying Lawrence Block and Donald E. Westlake’s collaborative collection, Hellcats and Honeygirls, for the printer. In case you’re on the fence about these three early novels by the mystery giants, here’s a nudge from Booklist: “…as an opportunity for fans to see what these genre giants were writing way back when, this is an indispensable collection.”

Peter S. Beagle — The BOOKLIST Review is in…

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Return

Copies of Peter S. Beagle’s new novella, Return, are in our warehouse, and will start winding their way to customers as soon as we manage to send out the large batch of in stock orders we’re currently working on.

Booklist, with perfect timing, just had this to say about Beagle’s gem of a novella: “The quality of Beagle’s prose, characterization, and world building (without the aid of maps or glossaries) is as superlative as ever, and he manages to compress a full-fledged story into an amazingly small space. Masterpieces, let all take note, do not have to be lifted with both hands.”

Charles Stross — TOAST in Stock and Shipping Soon

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Toast by Charles Stross.jpg

The first batch of copies of Charles Stross’s gathering of early stories, Toast, just arrived in our warehouse, and should ship next week.

As I write this, we still have five copies yet to be spoken for, and will be only too happy to reorder if necessary. We’ve mentioned it before, but the story “Antibodies” is worth the price of the collection alone. As is usual with other publishers’ books, US shipping is FREE.

New Peter Straub in Stock and Shipping

The Juniper Tree and Other Blue Rose Stories

Our new warehouse is fully functional now, and we’re currently shipping Peter Straub’s The Juniper Tree and Other Blue Rose Stories, which collects four of the most harrowing novellas written in the past quarter decade. In its starred review, Publishers Weekly noted that “…readers of dark fiction will not want to miss this chilling addition to Straub’s extensive bibliography.”

We have more than enough large online retail and wholesale orders to put the collection out of print, but will hold off another week or two to give our direct customers one final crack at it.

Jack Vance — THIS IS ME, JACK VANCE! Wins A Hugo Award

Monday, September 6th, 2010

This is Me, Jack Vance!

Congratulations to Jack Vance, whose memoir, This is Me, Jack Vance! took home the Best Related Book Hugo this weekend. We couldn’t be more pleased for Jack, and would like to extend our gratitude to him (and his wonderful agent, Ralph Vicinanza), for bringing this project our way.

We’re down to the last 100 copies or so of the third printing, with no plans to reprint. Jack’s Hugo win is sure to cause large online retail orders to spike, so if you want to be certain to snag a copy, your best bet is to order direct through SubPress.

Announcing THE KING OF THE ELVES by Philip K. Dick

Monday, September 6th, 2010

More than two decades ago, another small press issued The Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick in a hardcover edition limited to only 500 sets. Earlier this year, the Dick estate approached us to see if we’d issue them in hardcover again, with a uniform set of dust jackets by Bill Sienkiewicz, two stories that weren’t in the previous collected set, as well as additional story notes.

We enthusiastically said yes, and The King of the Elves is the first volume of our set, due in December. As our description notes: The King of the Elves is the opening installment of a uniform, five-volume edition of The Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick, expanded from the previous Collected Stories set to incorporate new story notes, and two added tales, one previously unpublished, and one uncollected. This generous collection contains 22 stories and novellas including Dick’s first published story, “Beyond Lies the Wub,” together with such landmark tales as “The Preserving Machine,” in which an attempt to preserve our fragile cultural heritage takes an unexpected turn, “The Variable Man,” a brilliantly imagined novella encompassing war, time travel, and the varied uses of technology, and the title story, in which Shadrach Jones, owner of a dilapidated gas station in Colorado, stumbles into an ongoing war between trolls and elves, and encounters a fantastic — and utterly unexpected — destiny. Like the best of Dick’s novels, these stories offer a wide variety of narrative and intellectual pleasures, and provide an ideal introduction to one of the singular imaginations of the modern era.

As an added incentive to order early, until the end of the day, September 10, 2010, we’re offering special prices on the leatherbound and trade hardcover editions of Elves. You can look for us to issue a new volume in the set roughly every six months.

China Mieville — THE CITY & THE CITY Wins the Hugo Award for Best Novel

Monday, September 6th, 2010

The City & the City

Our best to China Mieville, who shared the Hugo award for best novel with Paolo Bacigalupi this weekend. China’s novel was, of course, his staggeringly good The City & the City.

Please note: All editions of The City & the City are now sold out.

During our move, we uncovered a dozen copies of the limited edition, and have made the title active in our store again. In addition, we’re offering a two-day special on the last copies of the lettered edition, offering them for $300 instead of the regular $500 price.

Buy, read, and enjoy.

Interested readers will be happy to hear we have an original novella by Paolo Bacigalupi on next year’s schedule. Look for details in just a few short weeks.

Ian R. MacLeod — A Strong Review for JOURNEYS

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Journeys

The latest review of Ian R. MacLeod’s new collection, Journeys, is just in from SF Crowsnest, and it’s an unambiguously favorable one: “This is a fascinating collection of stories that demonstrates Ian R. MacLeod’s ability to weave elements of the fantastic into everyday life. The result is a series of stories that are true to human nature while the nature of reality changes about them. Even the very short stories that I have not mentioned here are finely crafted and worth appreciating individually. Another excellent service to the reading public has been performed by Subterranean Press.”

Robert Silverberg — BOOKLIST Praises THE PALACE AT MIDNIGHT

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

The Palace at MidnightYou can add Booklist to those who rate The Palace at Midnight, volume 5 in Robert Silverberg’s Collected Stories quite highly: “The volume opens with a classic, ‘Our Lady of the Sauropods,’ and ends with one of the best-ever sf stories about intelligent lobsters (!), ‘Homecoming.’ In between are many stories about time travel, many done for Playboy, and some done because the author, who considers himself a working writer rather than an ‘artist,’ simply couldn’t NOT write them.”
