Shipping Update — John Scalzi and Peter F. Hamilton

Monday, December 28th, 2009

The Reality DysfunctionWe’re just sending out the last copies of John Scalzi’s comic chapbook, Judge Sn Goes Golfing, so if you’ve been looking to laugh any appendages off this holiday season, you won’t have long to wait.

Following close on Scalzi’s heels will be the HUGE (over 900 page) space opera, The Reality Dysfunction, by Peter F. Hamilton. As Publishers Weekly noted, “Elements of space opera, Straubesque horror and adrenaline laced action make this a demanding, rewarding read.” Here’s where I have to admit one of the main reasons we published this novel is that I’ve always wanted to read it, but didn’t feel like making my way through two mass market paperbacks with tiny type.

Son of Retro Pulp TalesOnce we’re done with the Hamilton, we’ll be moving quickly on to Son of Retro Pulp Tales (edited by Joe R. Lansdale and Keith Lansdale) and The Dark Volume (Gordon Dahlquist).

The TerrorWe’ve just heard from our new traycase supplier, and it looks like they’re a wonder — no more six month to a year waits on traycases for our lettered edition. They’ve just sent a batch of traycases our way, which means that early in the new year we’ll be shipping:

This is Me, Jack Vance! (Jack Vance);
Songs of the Dying Earth (George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois, ed.);
The Last Colony (John Scalzi).

Their next project, which they’ll start just after the calendar turns, is the lettered edition of Dan Simmons’ The Terror. Be forewarned: Gorgeous things are planned for this lettered edition.

Brian Lumley — More Illustrations Added to NECROSCOPE: THE PLAGUE-BEARER

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Necro Plague Bearer LUNfront.jpg

Having a bit of time before Brian Lumley’s long (50,000 words) novella, Necroscope: the Plague-Bearer, needs to be sent to the printer, we set Bob Eggleton to creating some additional art that will be featured only in the limited edition. Bob’s sent us five full-page illustrations that will be tipped into the finished books, making the 250 copy signed leatherbound edition all the more a celebration of Lumley’s greatest creation. Head over to the book’s page and have a look at a few of Bob’s images.

Arturo Perez-Reverte — The First Review of THE CLUB DUMAS

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

The Club DumasOver at The Agony Column, Rick Kleffel touches not only on the tale contained in its pages, but on the physical qualities of Arturo Perez-Reverte’s masteripiece, The Club Dumas: “All this exotic prose and story is matched by peerless Subterranean production values. Once again, Vincent Chong is doing full-color paintings and a full-color cover as well as a passel of duo-tone images embedded in the book. Like The Shadow of the Wind, the type will be set in two colors, and the hardcover will use the same sort of heavy paper and binding. You’re getting a quality book to enhance your reading experiences — and I use the plural here deliberately, because you will want to re-read this novel.”

John Scalzi — Another Glowing Review for THE GOD ENGINES

Friday, December 18th, 2009

The God EnginesJohn Scalzi’s The God Engines, his first foray into fantasy continues to draw praise, this time from the Sacramento Book Review: “Scalzi somehow manages in a mere 136 pages to create believable, like-able characters who exist in a world that, while fantastic…is both wonderful and convincing.”

You might want to head over to the book’s page and have a look at a few of Vincent Chong’s interior illustrations. They reflect the dark, sly spirit of Scalzi’s novella perfectly.

JUDGE SN GOES GOLFING by John Scalzi

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Judge Sn Goes GolfingJohn Scalzi visits the universe of his bestselling novel The Android’s Dream for this exclusive short story, Judge Sn Goes Golfing, featuring fan favorite character Judge Nugan Bufan Sn — a brilliant alien jurist whose misanthropy and lack of social graces is matched only by his futile, unrequited for the game of golf. When he hits the links at the absymal Dulles Woods golf course, the unexpected happens: He begins to play well. But there are more hazards on the course for Sn than just sand traps and disaffected caddies…

Long a staple of Scalzi’s live readings, “Judge Sn Goes Golfing” has never seen print until now. Read what you’ve been missing.

SCREAMING SCIENCE FICTION by Brian Lumley

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Screaming Science FictionOne of our most popular Brian Lumley titles, Screaming Science Fiction, is now available as a sturdy trade paperback. All of Bob Eggleton’s creepy illustrations are included. When reviewing the hardcover, Booklist wrote, “…nine tales explore creepy encounters with everything from mutant bugs to ravenous aliens…Dedicated sf fans may find the science in these tales a little tame, but Lumley is clearly more interested in terror than technological intrigue. His fans, in particular, should find these macabre misadventures gratifyingly chilling.”
