THE CITY & THE CITY by China Mieville

Friday, June 26th, 2009

The City & the CityThese two starred reviews say it all.

From Publishers Weekly:
“Better known for New Weird fantasies (Perdido Street Station, etc.), bestseller Miéville offers an outstanding take on police procedurals with this barely speculative novel… Through this exaggerated metaphor of segregation, Miéville skillfully examines the illusions people embrace to preserve their preferred social realities.”

From Booklist:
“An excellent police procedural and a fascinating urban fantasy, this is essential reading for all mystery and fantasy fans.”

Tim Pratt Starting an Online Serial

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Spell Games by TA Pratt.jpgLike many people right now, author Tim Pratt has found himself in a tight spot. He and his family are down to one income at the moment–his. Not one to let life get him down, Tim is doing what he does best to support his family–write. His current project is a serialized, donation-funded urban fantasy novella starring his series protagonist Marla Mason – the star of Blood Engines, Poison Sleep, and other fine novels.

The first installment of the Bone Shop will be posted on June 29th, with weekly installments following. You’ll get a rare glimpse into Marla’s early life, before she became the chief sorcerer of Felport. We can easily say that Tim’s tales are worth reading as we’ve featured them in the past (“Her Voice in a Bottle”) and will in the future, with a fine comedic time travel novelette, “Troublesolving”.

THE WOMEN OF NELL GWYNNE’S by Kage Baker

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

The Women of Nell Gwynne'sKage Baker’s steampunk novella has just been published amidst a bevy of glowing reviews, including those from Publishers Weekly (”The beautifully drawn Victorian era is neatly spiced up with futuristic technology such as mechanical eye implants. Baker’s fans will delight in this slight, bawdy and funny confection.”); Booklist (“A good time should be had by enough readers to prompt further Nell Gwynne’s capers from Baker.”); and i09.com (”It’s a witty steampunk thriller as if written by Ian Fleming’s crazy libertine aunt. I am hopeful we will see more of Lady Beatrice and her sisters in espionage.”)

Pick up a copy and enjoy. Also, slated for publication later this year, illustrated by J. K. Potter, is her related, full length novel, Not Less Than Gods.

THIS IS ME, JACK VANCE! by Jack Vance

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

This is Me, Jack Vance! It seems that we’ll have three releases by Jack Vance this summer: his new collection, Wild Thyme, Green Magic; the massive (nearly 700 pages) tribute volume, Songs of the Dying Earth; and this gem, Jack’s autobiography. If you want to read about an adventuresome life that went well beyond being one of our seminal sf/fantasy writers, This is Me, Jack Vance! paints a picture of the travels and influences that went into many of Jack’s classic works. The book is rounded out by a healthy photo section, with images from Jack’s early years to his most recent. This, like so many of Jack’s books, is one to treasure.

WILD THYME, GREEN MAGIC by Jack Vance

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Wild Thyme, Green MagicOur latest Jack Vance collection, Wild Thyme, Green Magic is just out, selling very well, and drew very strong praise indeed from Publishers Weekly: “The ’spun-silver’ prose of fantasy grand master Vance (Lurulu) illuminates 12 delightful stories, some with intriguing afterwords by the author…this showcase follows Vance’s career from his very first publication, 1945’s ‘The World-Thinker,’ through 1961’s fast-paced novelette ‘The Augmented Agent’ and 1974’s Dying Earth story ‘The Seventeen Virgins’ to ‘Wild Thyme and Violets,’ the outline for an Italy-inspired gothic romance that reads like a surreal flash fiction novel and was first published in 2005. Most of the focus is on Vance’s work from the 1960s and 1970s, which ranges from dramatic fantasy (’Green Magic’) to classic science fiction parables (’Ullward’s Retreat’).”

Joe Abercrombie Coming to Subterranean Press + Richard Morgan Stock Update

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Just an early head’s up — we’ve just reached agreement with Pyr books to publish a signed limited edition of Joe Abercrombie’s so good it’s off the charts epic fantasy debut, The Blade Itself. We’ll be talking to Joe soon about an illustrator, and announce ordering details as soon as everything is in place.

The Steel RemainsWhile we’re talking about epic fantasy, we should mention that we’re down to the last 40 copies of Richard K. Morgan’s The Steel Remains, one of the most talked about and controversial fantasy novels of the past few years. This one turned out especially well, with a full color dust jacket, full color endsheets, and a frontice by Vincent Chong, as well as a truly stunning interior design, printed in two colors throughout. When Richard’s done with volume two, we’ll definitely attempt to pick up the rights to that volume.

Sleaze, the Old Fashioned Way, with Lawrence Block and Donald E. Westlake

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Ronald Rabbit is a Dirty Old ManIf you look at past titles published by SubPress, you’ll note we have a definite liking for some of Lawrence Block’s books that have gone rather far afield, such as Ronald Rabbit is a Dirty Old Man, Threesome, and Cinderella Sims. What most of Block’s many fans don’t know is that early in his career he wrote a trio of novels with the equally wonderful Donald E. Westlake. (An aside: Get to a bookstore and pick up Westlake’s The Ax, or any of the Parker novels he wrote as Richard Stark.)

Next year we’ll be publishing the trio of novels — Sin Hellcat, So Willing, and A Girl Called Honey — under the overall title of Hellcats and Honey Girls.
