Philip Jose Farmer 1918-2009

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Venus on the Half ShellThis morning, we here at Subterranean were told about the passing of Philip Jose Farmer, who we have been lucky to publish, but have been even luckier to be readers of for so many years. You can imagine it’s been a sad day here — we’re still working through our emotions about it. But we can say that our memories of him are good ones. He was always a joy to work with, and we will dearly miss his intelligence and good nature. Our thoughts are with his wife, and with all of his readers and fans. He’s one of the great ones.

An Interview with Christopher Paul Carey about Philip Jose Farmer’s THE OTHER IN THE MIRROR

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

The Other in the MirrorOver at the site that hosts Philip José Farmer’s International Bibliography, there’s a brand new interview with Christopher Paul Carey, who edited our new Farmer Omnibus, The Other in the Mirror, as well as some of our previous books by Phil. As Christopher notes of the new title and its relationship to “the other”: “The current omnibus, by focusing more on theme than series, allowed for the opportunity to drive that point home, to present to the science fiction readership in general, and Farmer readers specifically, a venue by which they could appreciate one of the larger themes that Philip José Farmer, a Grand Master in science fiction and fantasy, chose to explore in his over half a century of writing.” Head over to the site to check out the full interview.

DROOD — A Coveted Book at Suvudu

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

DroodShawn Speakman over at Suvudu covets our edition of Dan Simmons’s Victorian thriller, Drood: “Every once in a while I will bring attention to something that I want for my collection—in hopes of finding a few others out there with common interest as well as highlighting a book I think deserves it.

“The Subterranean Press edition of Drood, written by Dan Simmons, is one such book.

“The man on the cover is obviously Dickens, but if you look closely at his hat you see it is constructed of a collapsing train bridge, the event that altered the life of arguably the most famous writer in the 19th century. As that bridge collapsed, so did Dickens’ life, and the character of Drood rises up out of the smoke behind the train. That literary cover is just too beautiful and poignant not to love.”

We recently totaled up the orders we have on hand for Dan’s epic new novel, and between those for individuals, specialty retailers, wholesalers, and large online retailers, the total was over 1000, all that for a 500 copy print run. It bears repeating — if you want to be assured of getting a copy, your best bet is to order one direct. Getting one from another source, who we might not be able to supply with any copies, is a crapshoot at best.
