SUBTERRANEAN: TALES OF DARK FANTASY edited by William Schafer

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Subterranean: Tales of Dark FantasyOur latest original anthology, Subterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy, with stories by Poppy Z. Brite, Joe R. Lansdale, Mike Resnick, Patrick Rothfuss, and a host of others, is drawing uniform praise. Here’s what Booklist had to say: “In Subterranean Press’ latest collection of speculative fiction, the only common thread tying the tortured protagonists together is their origin in the darkest recesses of their creators’ imaginations. With dark fantasy as the sole prerequisite, editor Schafer has gathered 11 previously unpublished tales containing a wide spectrum of nightmarish ideas… Aside from a predilection for ghoulish visions, all the contributors share a gift for sharp-edged prose that keeps the reader pleasantly perturbed for hours.”

Mike Resnick — KILIMANJARO Reviewed in BOOKLIST

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

KilimanjaroThe first review for Kilimanjaro, Mike Resnick’s triumphant return to the world of “Kirinyaga” is in, and it’s a stunner. Here’s the summing up: “Resnick creates, in short order, a complex and engaging consideration of building a new world that includes a fascinating redefinition of utopia.”

John Crowley, Lucius Shepard, and David Weber Head to the Printer

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Conversation HeartsWe’ve just sent three new titles to the printer, including a gorgeous novelette by John Crowley (Conversation Hearts); as well as massive Best of collections by Lucius Shepard (The Best of Lucius Shepard) and David Weber (Worlds of Weber).

Worlds of WeberNow’s a good time to let everyone know that due to his schedule and the rigors of signing several thousand sig pages in a ridiculously short span of time, only part of the print run for Worlds of Weber will be signed. We’ll have enough copies for direct orders, but likely won’t be able to supply wholesalers or large online retailers with signed copies.

Ray Bradbury’s MOBY DICK in Stock Later This Week

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Moby DickThe White Whale has been sighted! Later this week we’re due to pick up Ray Bradbury’s legendary screenplay, Moby Dick, from the printer. Join Ahab, Ishmael, Starbuck, and the others aboard the doomed Pequod as they search for Ahab’s monstrous nemesis, and read, for the first time ever, Bradbury’s complete vision for the classic film. Our edition — the only edition — features a glorious color cover by Jon Foster, and a frontispiece by Rockwell Kent, taken from the definitive illustrated version of the novel.

Dean Koontz — More SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH News

Monday, July 7th, 2008

We’ve just received word that Dean Koontz will be gracing us with an appreciation for the Jack Vance Tribute Anthology, Songs of the Dying Earth, and, at a minimum, signing the lettered edition. We’ve written to him to see if his schedule will allow him to sign the limited as well, but won’t know that answer for several weeks.

Still, we’d like to extend our gratitude to Mr. Koontz for joining this project. With each step, from Tom Kidd’s wonderful art, to Dan Simmons turning in a 26,000 word novella, to the participation of SubPres favorites such as Robert Silverberg, Kage Baker and others, this has grown into a project for the ages. Our sincere thanks go out to editors George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois, as well as Ralph Vicinanza, who agented the deal, for bringing this gem our way.

A Few Future Projects — Elizabeth Bear, Peter S. Beagle, James P. Blaylock

Monday, July 7th, 2008

New AmsterdamJust a quick update on some titles we haven’t even announced yet. We’ve reached agreement with Peter S. Beagle to produce Mirror Kingdoms, a 200,000 word career retrospective next year. The editing duties are in the capable hands of Jonathan Strahan.

Earlier today, Elizabeth Bear turned in the final version of her sequel to New Amsterdam. Seven for a Secret is a 30,000 word novella set some years after the previous novel’s close, and looks to be a welcome return for Abby Irene and Sebastien, the Great Detective. Once again we’ve commissioned a cover by Patrick Arrasmith, whose work on New Amsterdam was spot on.

This past weekend I had the privilege of reading the first draft of The Ebb Tide, the new 25,000 word Langdon St. Ives steampunk novella by James P. Blaylock. It’s a vintage pleasure, with gas lamps, the mad scientist Narobondo, and subterranean excursions as well. I’ve asked Jim to do a little editorial tinkering, and he plans to expand the novella a little as well. Look for it to appear on our schedule for next year, profusely illustrated by J.K. Potter.

Work progresses on another Blaylock project. Metamorphosis contains three short stories co-written by Blaylock and some of his students, with an illustration for each tale by none other than Tim Powers. More on this one shortly, as the last elements are turned in.

We have advance copies of a number of future SubPress titles, including:

The Six Directions of Space (Alastair Reynolds)

One final thing. Please know that we get far more requests than we have extra ARCs to send out, so please don’t be put out if we’re not able to honor your request.

Charles de Lint Update — Announcing THE ONION GIRL

Monday, July 7th, 2008

As we published the start of Jilly Coppercorn’s story in Promises to Keep, it only seemed right that we do a special edition of The Onion Girl, perhaps the most important of the novels or stories to feature what may be Charles de Lint’s most beloved character.

This special edition of The Onion Girl will feature not only an original, exclusive introduction by Charles, but a full-color cover, endsheets, and a chapter heading illustration by Mike Dringenberg, who contributed the striking cover to Promises.

As Charles has moved beyond Newford in his new stories and upcoming novel, join us in celebrating Jilly with this special edition, which will be smythe sewn, and up to our usual production standards.

Limited: 500 signed numbered copies: $75
Lettered: 26 signed copies, handbound in leather and marbled paper, housed in a custom, hand made traycase: $500

***

Now also seems a good time to let everyone know what’s up with Woods and Waters Wild, our delayed collection by Charles. This project has finally made it to the top of Charles’s list — a bit later than all of us expected — and he’s expected to turn in the cover and the final edited manuscript in the next few weeks. We’ll post a fuller update as soon as we have everything in hand. Thanks to everyone for their patience on this particular project. Were certain it will be worth the wait.
