IN OTHER WORDS by John Crowley

Monday, February 5th, 2007

In Other WordsIn Other Words is one of those all-too-rare volumes that readers will return to again and again, finding new and valuable perceptions on each encounter. Incisive, sympathetic, and unfailingly erudite, it enhances our understanding of a major American writer, and serves as a welcome — and necessary — addition to a remarkable body of work.

From Library Journal:
“Although he considers himself neither a scholar nor a historian–”making suggestive remarks is more my job,” he writes–Crowley’s analyses offer a distinctive blend of scholarship, literary history, and readability.”

From Elizabeth Hand, in F&SF:
In Other Words collects essays, occasional pieces, and book reviews by John Crowley, in a wide-ranging compendium…this is an indispensable volume by one of our greatest writers.”

Three New Limited Editions Shipping This Week

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

Three New Limited Editions are expected in our offices this week, and will ship out as quickly as humanly possible!

In Other WordsPre-orders, especially from libraries, Amazon, and wholesalers, have been especially strong for John Crowley’s In Other Words, his first gathering of non-fiction. This one may sell out shortly after pub, as did his novella, The Girlhood of Shakespeare’s Heroines. “Although he considers himself neither a scholar nor a historian,” according to Library Journal, “Crowley’s analyses offer a distinctive blend of scholarship, literary history, and readability.” Elizabeth Hand is even more gracious in her F&SF review: “this is an indispensable volume by one of our greatest writers.”

PlatypusNext up is Tales from the Woeful Platypus, Caitlin R. Kiernan’s second gathering of erotic tales, gathered together in a small format hardcover. The signed, limited edition has been sold out for many months, but the $20 trade hardcover is in good supply. Like her previous foray into erotica, Frog Toes and Tentacles, this volume is unlikely to ever be reprinted.

TSDListed last, but shipping first — all copies should be in the mails by Tuesday — we have John Scalzi’s The Sagan Diary, a 100 page tale set in his “Old Man’s” Universe. The Sagan Diary collects a number of diary entries by series regular Jane Sagan, and takes place between Scalzi’s main novels The Ghost Brigades and the forthcoming The Last Colony. While it’s certainly not mandatory reading to understand either of those novels, it will add layers to your understanding.

Joe R. Lansdale — THE SHADOWS, KITH AND KIN — PW Review

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

Shadows Kith and KinPublishers Weekly chimes in with the first review of The Shadows, Kith and Kin, Joe R. Lansdale’s newest short story collection, and it’s a genuine keeper: “Lansdale’s restlessness with the conventions of any one genre is proved once again by this marvelously mixed collection whose nine stories provoke responses ranging from cold chills to gut-busting belly laughs… Laconic, ghoulish and often outrageously bawdy, these stories are never less than solid entertainment.” While you’re checking out the book’s page, have a gander at some of Mark A. Nelson’s interior illustrations for the not-quite-kids’-tale, “Bill, the Little Steam Shovel.”
