Stephen King — THE GREEN MILE Update

Monday, November 27th, 2006

GM

Stephen King’s landmark serial novel, The Green Mile, is nestled safely at the printer, on schedule for a slightly late January release — those dratted slipcases! To make the book even more special, at the last minute, we commissioned five more illustrations by Mark Geyer especially for the “Those Who Walked the Green Mile” section. Our thanks to everyone who’s made this one of our most successful books ever, even before its release. We can only hope you’re pleased by all the hard work that went into the book, from designer Gail Cross, to the yeoman work of five proofreaders, to all the coordinating I (Bill Schafer) had to do. Please be patient just another 6-8 weeks, and the Gift and Limited editions will be shipping. (We’ll be sending out letters to those who ordered the Lettered Edition, outlining the extended production schedule for that version.)

The Painted Bride by Stephen Gallagher

Painted Bride

Stephen Gallagher’s latest, The Painted Bride, is one pitch black thriller, 177 pages that open up the accelerator from the first word and doesn’t stop until the story does. By now, you’ve seen all the praise, from Booklist, Publishers Weekly, and The Washington Times. Give the book a try, but strap in first.

Continued

It’s begun. The first volume of the largest project SubPress has undertaken will be in our offices later this week and shipping. To Be Continued, volume one of The Collected Stories of Robert Silverberg, all 140k words of it, spread over nearly 400 pages, will be en route to customers in just a few short days. According to Publishers Weekly, “these selections, which Silverberg deems the best of his early era, illustrate his apprenticeship and presage the Grand Master he has become.” The print run on the trade edition is not large, just over 1000 copies, so get your order in before libraries and wholesalers start snapping them up.

A Free Mini-Collection by Cherie Priest

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Dreadful Skin
To make Cherie Priest’s debut hardcover even more attractive to those who haven’t yet encountered her wonderful novels Four & Twenty Blackbirds and Wings to the Kingdom, we’ve added a bonus item. Upon publication, everyone who has ordered Cherie’s book direct from SubPress will be emailed a mini-collection chapbook, containing 3-4 more stories by Cherie, bringing the bang for your $25 (plus free US shipping) into even more wallet friendly territory.

We’re in the process of choosing the stories right now, and will get started on the design pronto, so everything will be ready for Dreadful Skin’s February release. In the meantime, if you haven’t already done so, the first third of Dreadful Skin, the novella “The Wreck of the Mary Byrd”, a tale of a gambler, a werewolf, and a nun blessed with a Colt strapped to her thigh is available for your perusal.

New Titles Shipping This Week — Robert Silverberg and Stephen Gallagher

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Painted Bride

Two new titles are due in our offices late this week, and will start shipping immediately. First up is To Be Continued, the 400 page first volume of The Collected Stories of Robert Silverberg, which we project to run to eight volumes. Our series will vary greatly from the UK trade paperbacks published in the 1990s. Due to the publisher’s desire to limit the series to six volumes, many stories and, especially, novellas, could not be included. The Subterranean Collected Silverberg will be the definitive set.

Next up is Stephen Gallagher’s thrill a minute novel, The Painted Bride. Publishers Weekly chimed in with “Chalk up another winner–brief, merciless and punchy–for Gallagher” while according to Booklist, “Gallagher’s compelling thriller doesn’t miss a beat…and should win him fans eager to read his next outing.” Our last Gallagher title, The Spirit Box, sold out in the first month following publication, and if early orders are any indication, this one looks to do the same.

In the meantime, while all this shipping is going on, we’ll have even more books arriving!

Saints by Orson Scott Card
A Soul in a Bottle by Tim Powers
Reassuring Tales by T.E.D. KLEIN
Night Visions 12 edited by Kealan Patrick Burke
Havoc Swims Jaded by David J. Schow

We’ve just sent a number of titles to the printer for December and January release, but more about those soon!

REASSURING TALES by T.E.D. KLEIN

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

Reassuring Tales

Meticulously crafted and highly memorable, T.E.D. Klein’s work represents some of the best the horror and science fiction genres have to offer. From the classic novellas “Black Man With A Horn”, “Nadelman’s God”, “Children of the Kingdom” and “Petey” to the critically acclaimed novel The Ceremonies, Klein’s fiction is remarkable, much-vaunted, but sadly, not abundant.

It has been sixteen years since the release of Klein’s novella collection Dark Gods. Since then fans have been clambering for a follow-up.

The wait is over.

Subterranean Press is proud to present Reassuring Tales, which features previously uncollected short stories, a novella, and screen treatments, each one handpicked by the author, and book-ended by the classic “The Events At Poroth Farm”, the basis for the novel for which Klein is best known, The Ceremonies.

A SOUL IN A BOTTLE by Tim Powers

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

Soul

Tim Powers graces us with another original tale, this one roughly twice the length of his sold-out-on-publication chapbook, The Bible Repairman.

A first edition of a 1968 book of poems, with a sonnet that appears in no other copy — a mysterious girl with a special fountain-pen, who needs a special favor — and an old woman who warns used-book dealer George Sydney that helping the girl he’s fallen in love with will mean that he will never have fallen in love.

SAINTS by Orson Scott Card

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

SAINTS
The Kirkham family has fallen on hard times in Manchester, England, during wrenching changes of the industrial revolution. The older children are forced to work to support the family, until a ray of hope appears — strangers from America, preaching about building the city of God in the promised land.

Dinah and Charlie Kirkham choose to go, but the price they pay is far higher than they bargained for. When they make the sacrifice, they have no way of knowing just how much they will gain — and how much they will lose.

When Orson Scott Card’s historical epic Saints was first published in 1984, it had to overcome many obstacles: The original publisher changed the title, gave it an unfortunate cover, and published it as a paperback original, almost guaranteeing that it would disappear without a trace.

In spite of these obstacles, many readers discovered it and passed it from hand to hand. The novel has endured, building a community of loyal readers for more than twenty years. This edition marks its first appearance in hardcover, and includes a new afterword by the author, recounting the saga of the book’s development and publication.

Signed copies of the trade edition are available when ordering direct from Subterranean Press
