Tim Powers - A Soul in a Bottle - A Taste of the Art

Soul

J.K. Potter has front burnered the copious illustrations for A Soul in a Bottle, the ghostly tale with a twist as only Tim Powers can write. The entire book will be printed as a smaller format hardcover, in two colors, the same as the duotone art, giving this powerful tale the deluxe treatment it richly deserves.

King Windo

We’ve just posted a different set of Mark Geyer’s stunning, pulpy illustrations to the tenth anniversary of Stephen King’s The Green Mile. Part one, The Two Dead Girls, has been fully designed and proofed, and sent to Mr. King for his approval. The illustrations are on hand for parts two, three, and four, which we’ll be designing shortly.

Razor
Beware, The Lords of the Razor have arrived, with terrifying new tales by Joe R. Lansdale, Bradley Denton, Chet Williamson, Gary A. Braunbeck, and a host of other fine writers who’ve allowed the blood from their veins to drip onto the page. Each tale is brought terrifyingly to life with a full-page Glenn Chadbourne illustration. The book itself rests uneasily in a demonskin slipcase.

Joe R. Lansdale’s Lords of the Razor in Stock and Shipping

Razor
That nasty bit of work, Joe R. Lansdale’s GOD OF THE RAZOR, is loose in the world again. Writers as diverse as Chet Williamson, Hugh B. Cave, Bradley Denton, and Gary A. Braunbeck have taken Lansdale’s trademark creation and given him new life in terrifying tales, each illustrated by Glenn Chadbourne.

Lords of the Razor, the book itself is a thing of beauty, from the corrupt Tim Truman cover, to the red demonskin slipcase that houses it.

But don’t take our word for how well this book turned out. Here’s a taste of the reviews it’s receiving.

New Kealan Patrick Burke Excerpt

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

Welcome to Eddie’s Tavern, the setting of Currency of Souls, the only functioning waterhole in a near-dead town. Among the people you’ll meet tonight are: Tom, Milestone’s haunted lawman, who walks in the shadow of death; Gracie, the barmaid, a wannabe actress, doomed to spend her hours tending bar in a purgatory of her father’s making; Flo, the town seductress, who may or may not have murdered her husband; Cobb, a nudist awaiting an apology from the commune who cast him out; Wintry, the mute giant, whose story is told only in cryptic messages scribbled beneath newspaper headlines; Kyle, the kid, who keeps a loaded gun beneath the table; and Cadaver, who looks like a corpse, but smells real nice, and occupies his time counting stacks of pennies.

Limited to 750 signed numbered copies at $40, and a 15 copy lettered edition at $250. Currency of Souls is due out in February. Meanwhile, we’ve just posted a brand new excerpt..

DUCK

We’ve just updated the page for Poppy Z. Brite’s upcoming novella, D*U*C*K, with a fuller description of the novella, and some nifty cover art you just might recognize as being influenced by a famous movie.

Here’s the fuller description:
Following a life-threatening assault by a waiter and the defection of one of his best cooks to a trendy new restaurant, Chef John Rickey accepts a gig catering the annual banquet for the South Louisiana branch of hunting/conservation group Ducks Unlimited. Held in the Cajun prairie town of Opelousas, this all-duck banquet mightn’t seem a great opportunity for a chef to restore his wounded pride…but the guest of honor is Rickey’s childhood football hero, former New Orleans Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert.

Rickey’s crew is unstoppable, his menu is perfect, and the ducks are thick in the marshes this year. In Louisiana, though, every important occasion has a nutcase waiting in the wings…and all too often, the nutcase is an elected official. Will Rickey get the chance to cook for his idol, or will it end in chaos?

The book itself is a thing of beauty, if you’ll forgive us for saying so ourselves. Insipid is printed in two colors throughout, with a cover and frontis by Blake Lethem, JL’s brother. All copies ordered directly from Subterranean Press are signed by the author, while supplies last.

Three Days to Never
by Tim Powers

Three Days to Never

The Numbered edition of Three Days to Never, Tim Powers, was sold out on publication. A very few copies of the lettered edition remain unreserved. Three Days to Never is vintage powers, involving time travel, Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, and secret societies, all circling a discovery Einstein made in the ’20s, but deemed too dangerous to divulge. J.K. Potter provides some of the best illustrative work of his long career in this volume.
